The User Workshop "MARISS Contribution to GMES Services for Maritime Security: Understanding Demand, Supply, Implementation Scenarios" took place with the objective to provide initial structured feedback from the user community and additional key stakeholders in the following areas:
  • Enhancing Maritime Situational Awareness through the integration of satellite Earth Observation based surveillance with conventional tracking and detection technologies (the MARISS project).
  • Development of an independent European satellite AIS capability.

The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities organizes periodical meetings. Iala is a non profit making international technical association. Established in 1957, it gathers together marine aids to navigation authorities, manufacturers and consultants from all parts of the world and offers them the opportunity to compare their experiences and achievements.

July 19-20, 2007 Lisbon, Portugal Portuguese Council Presidency event
Building the future of science and research in Europe is a priority. This is a main objective of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the second semester 2007. Coinciding with the launch of the Green Paper on the European Research Area, the Presidency will open the debate on the future of the scientific and technological policy in Europe. All the relevant stakeholders will be invited to discuss the development of science and technology in Europe with the aim of promoting joint action at the national and international level. Governments and European institutions, regions, national funding agencies, large European scientific laboratories, the scientific community, industry, the banking sector, universities and research institutions need to be partners in concerted and joint action to ensure scientific development in Europe.

May 31, 2007 Brussels, Belgium EARSC Workshop "In-situ monitoring and Earth observation in the framework of GMES and GEOSS"
EARSC is a non-profit-making organisation which is actively involved in coordinating and strengthening the Earth-observation chain and promoting the European Earth observation industry in programmes such as Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES).

May 29-30, 2007 Barcelona, Spain Eurisy conference "Future Challenges for Local and Regional Authorities: How can Space Technology help?"
The opening conference of a cycle of events throughout Europe will bring to Barcelona numerous professionals from regions and cities and from the space technology and service sectors. The two-day program is designed to encourage discussion and effective information exchange on the challenges ahead from the user perspective, and also to present possible solutions provided by existing and planned space applications in the areas of earth observation, positioning navigation and timing and telecommunications.

April 23-27, 2007 Montreux, CH ESA 2007 Envisat Symposium
More than 800 scientists from around the world will gather to attend the 2007 Envisat Symposium to present and review results from ESA Earth observation satellites. The objectives of the largest ESA Earth observation (EO) symposium ever held are to provide a forum for investigators to present results of ongoing research project activities using data from Envisat, ERS and Third Party Missions and to review and assess the development of applications and services. The conference will include a special session dedicated to the joint ESA/European Commission Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme, including the GMES space component, Sentinel missions and contributions from national missions.

April 17, 2007 Munich, Germany Ensuring sustainability of GMES
The main objective of the GMES Initiative of the German EU Council Presidency 2007 is to achieve a European consensus on the way forward for the GMES long term issues -the Munich Roadmap. The aim is to deliver this roadmap at a high level conference during the German Presidency. The German GMES initiative includes a high level conference being held on 17 April 2007 in Munich. The objectives are twofold:
1) Present the progress achieved with GMES so far and communicate a perspective on its services that will be operational from 2008 onwards.
2) Address the aspects of sustainability and discuss the way forward the Munich Roadmap.

March 28 2007 Munich, Germany Surveillance of Borders Coastlines and Harbours (SOBCAH)-Workshop on Border and Port Security
In the context of the SOBCAH (Surveillance of Borders Coastlines and Harbours) PASR project, Hellenic Aerospace Industry organize the first workshop on Border and Port Security which takes place on March 28th 2007 in Germany. The objective of the workshop is to present new technology and requirements for enhancing surveillance in the area of border and harbour security as well as the need for integration between existing systems.

March 26-27 2007 Munich, Germany European Conference on Security Research SRC '07
The conference will be the launch event for the "European Security Research Programme" which will be published for the first time as a separate programme under the 7th Research Framework Programme 2007-2013. Representatives of numerous European Member States will explain their programmes and initiatives in the field of security research during the course of the conference. The Federal Government will present Germany's new national Security Research Programme.

March 6-7 2007 Frascati, Italy 5th GSE Co-location meeting
The 5th GSE Co-location meeting was held in ESRIN on 6-7 March followed by a 1 day briefing event for national delegates. The meeting focused on the transition of service management from ESA GSE to the EC GMES Fast Track/Pilot Services and the Seventh Framework Programme.

February 20-23, 2007 Barcelona, Spain Setmana Geomātica Barcelona
The Geomatic Week Conference is a biennial event organized by the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia (ICC), Institute of Geomatics (IG), Official Professional Association of Technical Engineers in Topography (COETT) and the School of Building Construction of Barcelona (EPSEB) that deals with all of the disciplines of geomatics in depth: Geodesy and Navigation, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Next year's conference, the seventh, besides covering all of the scientific and technical aspects of these disciplines, the central topic of the conference will be "High resolution sensors and their applications".

23-24 March, 2006 Ispra, Italy Course on the use of satellite images for vessel detection
The Join Research Centre (JRC) organised a two-day course on the use of satellite images for vessel detection. Given that JRC is one of the members of the consortium, they distributed the first Press Release among the attendees, mainly research experts.

The European Space Agency organized its first SAR oceanography workshop, SEASAR 2006 , entitled "Advances in SAR Oceanography from ENVISAT and ERS missions"

6-8 December, 2005 Frascati, Italy GMES Services Element
The main focus was to understand the requirements and scope for cooperation between the new GMES Service Networks being set up in the second stage of the GMES Services Element. In addition, the interfaces between GSE consortia and the activities to be executed within the GMES "Fast Track" Services were characterized. Finally, as each consortia is required to demonstrate how they are implementing a service network that is compliant with the INSPIRE directive, a dedicated session on INSPIRE was organized.
