Q: What is MARISS? What are its objectives?[ + top ]

A: MARISS is an earth observation (EO) or satellite remote-sensing program, focused on maritime security on European waters. MARISS is supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the GMES join initiative with the European Union (EU). It promotes the utilization of satellites for public good and in support of public policy in the area of maritime security. MARISS prime objective is to deliver services to stakeholder groups who are interested in issues related to maritime security in Europe. These groups include policy makers, government departments and public agencies.

A: The MARISS service portfolio has evolved to meet the key information needs of the European maritime security stakeholders that can be addressed with EO data. Currently MARISS services include:
  • Vessel detection in Open Sea Areas
  • Vessel Tracking at sea borders
  • Anomalies Detection in specific Critical Areas
  • Decision making support
Q: How will MARISS improve the existing maritime security services? [ + top ]

A: MARISS will upgrade the current existing Maritime Security Systems by:
  • Correlating results acquired at different acquisition times and which do not correspond to the same geographical area to help to the ship identification objective
  • Integrating results acquired by different sensors at the same time and over the same geographical area
  • Applying the latest picture compilation capabilities to improve the interpretation of features

A: MARISS clients are primarily public agencies involved in maritime security issues: Customs departments, Military Intelligence services, Coast Guards, etc.
Q: In what geographical regions do you offer your services? [ + top ]

A: MARISS services are offered in the South Spanish Coast, North East Atlantic, North Atlantic Channel, Western Atlantic, Southern Baltic Sea, and Mediterranean.

A: The MARISS services provide information on ship detection and ship identification.
Q: How are the services provided? [ + top ]

A: The MARISS services results may be provided to the user terminal, transmitted by a secure internet connection, or delivered through a Web GIS

A: MARISS is currently contracted by the European Space Agency to provide these services. Therefore, at this moment in time they are free of charge with the aim to get users to appreciate the benefit of satellite-based monitoring services in maritime security (+ join user group). However, is the ultimate goal of MARISS team to become sustainable, so in a future scope MARISS services prices will be provided.

A: There are two primary satellites in use: ENVISAT for the radar images, and Spot 5 for the high resolution optical images.

A: We certainly hope so. MARISS not only intends to provide quasi real time services, but also It is one of the MARISS objectives to provide support to maritime security policy makers. Therefore, we hope that the MARISS services enrich the work of those dealing with maritime security issues.
